Stay safe over the festive season

Accidents can happen easily around Christmas, with a little forward planning and the help of these tricks and tips everyone can enjoy a safer christmas! Fire Safety tips from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service

  • Keep decorations and cards away from fires and other heat sources.

  • Don’t cook if you have been drinking and never leave cooking unattended.

  • Never place candles near your Christmas tree or materials that can catch alight easily.

  • Keep candles, lighters and matches out of children’s reach. Never leave lit candles unattended.

  • Never overload electrical sockets. Always switch Christmas lights off and unplug them before you go to bed.

  • Decorations can burn easily – so don’t attach them to lights or heaters.

  • Take time to check on older relatives and neighbours this Christmas as they are potentially at greater risk from fire.

  • Make sure your family and visitors know how to escape in an emergency.

  • Check your Christmas tree lights are safe and carry the British Safety Standard sign.

General tips

  • Buy children's gifts for the correct age group.

  • Watch out for small objects which could be potential choking hazards.

  • Not all Christmas decorations are toys - make sure they are out of reach of young children.

  • Allow plenty of time to prepare and cook Christmas dinner - accidents happen when you rush.

  • Never use a knife to open or assemble presents

  • Always read the instructions for new gadgets and watch out for wires and cables on the floor.

  • Falls are the most common accidents so try to keep clutter to a minimum.
