I had never really known what I wanted to do with my life. I had been a stay at home mum since I was 17 and a carer for my parents for quite some time also.
I hadn't really gained much experience in the work place and I had applied for jobs but had never got past the interview stages because of my lack of experience. My confidence was at an all time low.
I had always been scared to start a new job as I was worried that I would be thrown straight into a role and be completely out of my depth.
A few years ago, my sister managed to get an apprenticeship with Swindon Borough Council. Throughout her time there I watched her confidence sky rocket and her knowledge continue to grow. That was when I knew that an apprenticeship was exactly what I wanted to do.
I loved the fact that if I got an apprenticeship, that I would be able to learn and work at the same time.
When I was told that Swindon Borough Council were advertising for apprenticeships again, I jumped at the chance.
A few weeks later, I received an email to say that I had got the interview, I couldn't believe it! I spent every day for weeks researching everything I possibly could about Housing.
When I finally got to the interview, there were three people sat in front of me, which felt a bit daunting, but they managed to put me at ease very quickly. I had given my all in the interview and hoped that it was enough.
About a week later, i received a call to say that I had got the apprenticeship! I was so happy that I cried, it was amazing to know that someone else believed in me and what I could do.
Since I've started my apprenticeship within Housing Options, I have been astounded with how supportive and understanding they are.
In the role that I am in, I have been able to do things that I never thought that I would be able to do, such as handling things like the Deposit Guarantee Scheme files. Which has given me more confidence and belief in myself because i now know that I can do things that I had never even contemplated before.
I know that in this role, I will be able to fulfill my full potential. I look forward to learning more and seeing where this experience will take me next.
