How my Apprenticeship Changed my Life

When I started my apprenticeship, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, especially what career path that I wanted to take, but then again who does?

I began my apprenticeship in November 2014 in the Garage Department and during my time in this role I found out I was pregnant with my daughter, this was daunting enough without having to work out how I would carry on with my apprenticeship - how could i juggle a baby, my assignments and work?!

During my maternity leave it was discussed that I would move teams and start a role with a little more flexibility so that I could manage better with my daughter and to move to a role that seemed to suit me a little better. I was apprehensive at first as I'd gotten so comfortable in my role in Garages and change was a scary thing, especially with so many other things in my life changing at the same time, so at this point I figured I'd just go with the flow and at least give it a try.

So I became a member of the Housing Business Development Team in the role of Communications, and fast forwarding 15 months and I've never been happier. The incredible support from both

my managers and colleagues in keeping me going even when things got tough and I lost my motivation has led me to where I am today.

I have been consistently motivated to step out of my comfort zone this past year to try new things, to work on my personal development and I have come from not even being able to pick up the phone to contact a tenant to leading on projects, speaking on the radio, doing presentations and chairing meetings - the change has been drastic, but incredibly liberating.

I never thought I would find the career path that I felt was right for me at the age of 21, but this apprenticeship has helped me not only to develop enough skills and experience for this but it has helped me find something that I love. I can now start to work my way up and be a good role model to my daughter as she grows up.

The answer is yes - you can juggle your personal life and work, with enough determination, anythings possible.
