'Pay to Stay' will not reside in Swindon
Housing minister Gavin Barwell announced in December that the so-called “Pay to stay” policy had been reviewed and would not be compulsory. This is the policy where higher wage earners would have been required to pay a market rent for their council property.
“Since the summer, the Government has been reviewing this policy,” he said in a written statement.
“We have listened carefully to the views of tenants, local authorities and others and as a result, we have decided not to proceed with a compulsory approach.”
Mr Barwell said local councils would be allowed to impose the policy voluntarily, however Swindon Borough Council has taken the decision not to proceed with this locally.
