Tenant Academy Awards another class of cooks
May 20, 2016
In one of his last duties as Mayor, Councillor Andrew Bennett, presented certificates to students of Swindon Borough Council’s Tenant Academy.
The Tenant Academy students attended the award ceremony at the Central Community Centre where the Mayor presented certificates for the Jamie Oliver cookery course, levels 1 and 2, and Food Hygiene level 2.
Councillor Bennett (The Mayor) opened proceedings by giving his own cookery tips and went on to individually congratulate them on their achievements.
Recipients commented on the courses saying how friendly the trainers were and how informative they found them.
Sharon Northcott, who is a volunteer with baby and toddler group The Little Angels in Pinehurst said “I realised I can actually cook. I tried foods I wouldn’t normally try and surprised myself by liking them. The food hygiene certificate means we can now serve food at our group fund raisers, make sandwiches for the children and even do some cooking with the toddlers.”
‘Many of the cooks said how the course has made them more confident and they had surprised themselves by trying new food. By learning to cook from scratch they were able to cut down on costs whilst improving taste,’ said Tenant Academy Lead Lynn Jarvie.
Highworth resident Michael Cummings said, ‘I would never have touched a pan before, now I can make a meal. I now do some of the cooking at home – my wife is delighted’.
The tenants also had time for a cup of tea and a cake, and a chance to discuss their experiences of the Tenant Academy with each other.
